Dryer Vent Cleaning Basics

What is dryer vent cleaning?
Dryer vent cleaning is the removal of lint and debris from the entire duct that runs from the back of your dryer to the vent cap outside your home. We use a rotating brush system and a high-powered vacuum to scrub the full length of the duct, clear the exterior cap, and verify airflow afterward. It is different from cleaning the lint screen, which only catches a portion of the lint your dryer produces.
How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
Once a year for most households, and every six months if you do more than 8 loads a week, have pets, own a roof-vented dryer, or have a duct longer than 25 feet. The U.S. Fire Administration and most dryer manufacturers recommend annual cleaning as the baseline.
Why does lint build up in the vent if I clean the lint trap every load?
The lint screen only catches about 75% of lint. The rest travels down the duct with the hot, moist exhaust air, sticks to the duct walls, and packs tightest at elbows, screens, and the exterior cap. Over a year a typical family's duct collects a few cups to several gallons of lint.
How long does dryer vent cleaning take?
Most wall or ground-level vents take 45–60 minutes. Roof vents take 60–90 minutes because we clear the cap from the roof and clean the vertical run from both ends. Bird nest removal or a very long duct can add 20–30 minutes.
Does dryer vent cleaning really make a difference?
Yes. The most common result customers notice is that dry times drop from two cycles back to one. A clean vent restores airflow, lowers the dryer's operating temperature, cuts energy use by up to 30%, extends the life of the heating element and motor, and removes the number one cause of dryer fires.
What is the difference between dryer vent cleaning and air duct cleaning?
Dryer vent cleaning cleans the single 4-inch exhaust duct from your dryer to the outdoors. Air duct cleaning cleans the HVAC supply and return ductwork for your furnace and AC. They require different tools and we specialize only in dryer vents, so you get a technician who does this all day.
Do I need to be home for dryer vent cleaning?
Someone 18 or older needs to let us in and move anything blocking the laundry area. After that you don't need to stay in the room. For roof vents we also need access to the yard side where we set up the ladder.
Can you clean the dryer vent from inside without going outside?
For most wall vents, yes, we clean from inside and verify at the exterior cap. For roof vents we always clear the cap from the roof because that is where the worst clog usually sits; cleaning only from inside can push a lint plug into the cap and make the problem worse.
Is dryer vent cleaning messy?
No. Our vacuum captures lint as the brush dislodges it, we lay down a drop cloth behind the dryer, and we clean up before we leave. You should not see any lint in the laundry room when we're done.
Will cleaning damage my dryer or ductwork?
No. We use flexible nylon brushes sized to 4-inch duct that scrub without scratching or dislodging joints. If we find damaged, crushed, or disconnected duct we stop, show you, and tell you what it would cost to fix before touching it.
What is a dryer vent made of?
Code calls for rigid or semi-rigid aluminum or galvanized steel duct, 4 inches in diameter, with joints taped not screwed. Many homes have white vinyl or foil flex duct instead, which traps lint in its ridges and is a fire hazard. We flag flex duct whenever we find it.
How much lint comes out of a typical dryer vent?
A vent that hasn't been cleaned in a few years typically yields one to three gallons of packed lint. We have pulled over a 13-gallon bag from a roof vent that had never been cleaned in 15 years.
Do you clean the dryer itself?
Lint behind the drum and around the heating element is an optional add-on. The standard service covers the duct from the back of the dryer to the outdoor cap, including the flexible transition hose.
Warning Signs & Symptoms
Open this section as its own page →
How do I know if my dryer vent is clogged?
The five most common signs are clothes taking more than one cycle to dry, the dryer or laundry room feeling very hot, a burning smell while the dryer runs, lint building up around the outdoor vent cap or behind the dryer, and the outdoor vent flap not opening while the dryer runs.
Why does my dryer take two cycles to dry clothes?
A restricted vent is the number one cause. When airflow drops, moist air can't leave the drum, so clothes stay damp and the dryer runs longer. If the lint screen is clean and the dryer still takes two cycles, the vent is almost always the culprit.
Why is the top of my dryer hot to the touch?
Heat that should be exhausting outdoors is backing up because the vent is restricted. A dryer with good airflow stays warm, not hot. This is a safety warning sign, not just an annoyance.
Why does my laundry room smell like burning when the dryer runs?
Lint sitting on or near the heating element is scorching. Stop using the dryer and book a cleaning. A burning smell is one of the last warnings before a dryer fire.
Why is there lint on the outside of my house near the vent?
Lint escaping around the cap means the cap, flapper, or screen is partially blocked and exhaust is finding another way out. The inside of the duct is usually worse than what you see.
My dryer vent flap doesn't open when the dryer runs. What does that mean?
Airflow is too weak to push the flapper open, or the flapper is stuck shut with lint. Either way exhaust is being forced back into the duct. This is a reliable visual test you can do yourself in two minutes.
Why are my clothes still damp after a full cycle?
Moisture can't leave the drum because exhaust air isn't exiting the house. Clean the lint screen, then run a timed cycle and check the outdoor flap. If airflow is weak, the vent needs cleaning.
Why is there moisture or condensation in my laundry room?
Humid exhaust is leaking back into the room, often from a disconnected or crushed transition hose behind the dryer or a plugged duct. We reconnect and seal hoses as part of the service.
Is excessive lint on my lint screen a sign of a clogged vent?
Not directly, but more lint on the screen often means the dryer is running longer cycles because of a restricted vent. Watch dry times rather than screen lint.
Why did my dryer shut off mid-cycle?
Modern dryers have thermal fuses and high-limit thermostats that trip when the dryer overheats. Overheating is almost always caused by restricted airflow. Many customers call us after a repair tech replaced a thermal fuse and told them to clean the vent.
My new dryer takes forever to dry. Is the dryer defective?
Usually not. A new dryer connected to an old clogged vent will perform badly from day one. Have the vent cleaned before calling for warranty service; many manufacturers won't cover airflow-related complaints.
What does a clogged dryer vent look like?
Inside the duct, you see gray felt-like lint coating the walls and packed plugs at elbows. At the exterior cap you see lint hanging from the louvers or matted on a screen. Behind the dryer, lint piles up on the floor if the hose is leaking.
Pricing & Payment

How much does dryer vent cleaning cost in the Twin Cities?
Our flat rate is $139 for a wall or ground-level vent and $199 for a roof vent, with no trip charge or hidden fees. Most Twin Cities companies charge $100–$250 depending on vent location and add trip fees; we publish our pricing so you know the total before you book.
Why does a roof dryer vent cost more to clean?
Roof vents require a ladder setup, roof safety gear, clearing the cap from above, and cleaning the vertical run from both ends. It takes longer and carries more risk, so the flat rate is $199 instead of $139.
Are there any hidden fees or trip charges?
No. The price you see when you book is the price you pay unless you add optional services on site, which we confirm with you first. No trip charge, no fuel surcharge, no weekend upcharge.
When do I pay?
After the job is done and you're satisfied. We accept credit and debit cards, cash, Zelle, and Venmo. No deposit is required to book.
Do you offer discounts for multiple dryers or units?
Yes. A second dryer at the same address is $89, and multi-unit buildings start at $79 per unit for scheduled whole-building cleanings. Contact us for a quote on 4 or more units.
What if you find a bird nest or extra work?
We show you the issue and the add-on price before doing anything extra. Bird nest removal is $69. You can always decline the add-on and we will complete the standard cleaning as booked.
Is dryer vent cleaning worth the cost?
A clogged vent adds 15–30 minutes to each load, which for a family doing 8 loads a week is roughly $80–$120 a year in extra electricity or gas, plus a shorter dryer lifespan. One cleaning typically pays for itself within the year before you count fire prevention.
Does homeowners insurance cover dryer vent cleaning?
Routine cleaning is maintenance and is not covered. However, some insurers ask about dryer vent maintenance after a fire claim, and documented annual cleaning can help. We email a receipt with before/after notes you can keep on file.
Do you charge more for long duct runs?
No. Our flat rate covers duct runs up to 35 feet, which includes nearly every home in the metro. If a run is unusually long or has more than four elbows we tell you before starting, and the price stays within the posted range.
Can I get a quote without booking?
Yes, but you don't need one. Pricing is flat and listed on the pricing page. If you tell us whether the vent exits through the roof or the wall, you know your exact price.
Do you price match other dryer vent cleaning companies?
If a licensed, insured local competitor offers a lower written price for the same service, send it over and we will match or beat it.
Roof Dryer Vents
Open this section as its own page →
How do I know if my dryer vents through the roof?
Look outside for a vent cap near your dryer's side of the house. If there is no 4-inch cap on any exterior wall and your laundry is on an upper floor or an interior wall, look at the roof for a small hooded cap, usually gray or black. During booking we show animated pictures of both so you can pick.
Why do roof dryer vents clog faster?
Hot moist air has to travel straight up, and lint falls back down when the dryer stops, so lint stacks at the bottom elbow and mats against the cap screen at the top. Roof caps also have a damper or screen that catches lint and is rarely inspected because no one goes on the roof.
Do you go on the roof to clean the vent?
Yes, when roof pitch and weather allow. We clear the cap, remove any screen or nest, and run the brush down from the top while vacuuming at the dryer. On very steep or icy roofs we clean from inside with an extended rod system and inspect the cap with a camera.
Can you clean a roof dryer vent in winter?
Yes. We clean from inside the home with an extended brush system and verify flow at the cap. If the roof is safe to walk we clear the cap from above; if it is iced, we schedule a quick free follow-up visit to check the cap when it melts.
Is it safe to have a dryer vent on the roof?
It is allowed by code and common in two-story homes, but it is the highest-maintenance vent type. We recommend cleaning roof vents every 6–12 months and replacing screened caps with a louvered dryer-specific cap.
What is the best dryer vent cap for a roof?
A dryer-specific roof cap with a large hood, a free-swinging damper, and no screen. Screens trap lint. We can install a pest-resistant cap for $89 that keeps birds out without blocking lint.
Can I move my dryer vent from the roof to a wall?
Sometimes. If the laundry room shares an exterior wall, rerouting to a wall vent shortens the run and eliminates roof clogs. We can assess feasibility during the cleaning; rerouting itself is a separate HVAC or handyman job.
Why is there ice or frost around my roof dryer vent?
Warm moist exhaust meets freezing air at the cap and condenses. Some frost is normal in a Minnesota January. Heavy ice buildup means slow airflow is letting the moisture linger, which points to a partial clog.
My dryer vent exits through the soffit. Is that a roof vent?
For pricing we treat soffit vents like wall vents ($139) when they are reachable from a standard ladder. Soffit vents often have the same screened-cap problem as roof vents, so we check and clear the cap every time.
How long is a typical roof dryer vent run?
Usually 10–25 feet vertically from a second-floor laundry room through the attic to the roof. Longer runs with offsets in the attic collect more lint at each turn.
Wall & Ground-Level Dryer Vents

How do I find my dryer vent outside?
Walk around the exterior of the house on the same side as your laundry room and look for a 4-inch hooded cap with a flap, usually 1–4 feet above the ground for basement laundry or at second-floor height for upstairs laundry. Run the dryer and look for the flap moving or feel for warm air.
My outdoor dryer vent is behind bushes. Is that a problem?
Yes if the bushes touch the cap. Shrubs trap lint, block the flapper, and in winter hold snow against the opening. Keep 12 inches of clearance so the flap swings freely.
Should my dryer vent have a screen on it?
No. Building code prohibits screens on dryer exhaust terminations because they trap lint. If your cap has a screen we remove it and recommend a louvered or pest-guard cap designed for dryers.
What is a dryer vent flapper and why does it matter?
The flapper is the hinged door on the exterior cap. It opens from airflow when the dryer runs and closes to keep cold air and pests out. A stuck or broken flapper either leaks cold air into your house or blocks exhaust.
Can snow block my dryer vent?
Yes. Drifting snow against a low wall vent blocks the flapper and forces exhaust back into the duct. After big snowfalls, clear 12 inches around the cap. We also install vent extensions that raise the outlet above typical drift height.
Why is cold air coming into my laundry room from the dryer?
The exterior flapper is stuck open or missing, letting outside air flow backward down the duct. We replace damaged caps so the flap seals when the dryer is off.
Is a ground-level dryer vent cheaper to clean than a roof vent?
Yes. Wall and ground-level vents are $139 because we reach the cap from the ground or a short ladder and clean the full run from inside. Roof vents are $199.
My dryer vents into the garage or crawl space. Is that okay?
No. Dryer exhaust must terminate outdoors. Venting into a garage, attic, or crawl space creates moisture, mold, and a lint fire hazard, and for gas dryers it dumps combustion gases indoors. We can advise on correct termination.
Can I use one of those indoor lint trap kits instead of venting outside?
Not for a gas dryer, ever. For electric dryers they are a last resort for apartments with no exterior access and they dump warm moist air and fine lint into the room. A proper exterior vent is always better.
Dryer Fire Safety
Open this section as its own page →
How many house fires are caused by dryers each year?
The U.S. Fire Administration estimates about 2,900 home clothes dryer fires per year, causing roughly 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss. Failure to clean the dryer and vent is the leading cause, cited in about a third of fires.
Can a clogged dryer vent cause a fire?
Yes. Lint is highly flammable, and a restricted vent traps heat in the dryer cabinet where the heating element or gas burner can ignite accumulated lint. Dryer fires then spread through the lint-lined duct into walls and attics.
Can a clogged dryer vent cause carbon monoxide poisoning?
Yes, with a gas dryer. Gas dryers exhaust combustion byproducts including carbon monoxide through the same vent as the lint. If the vent is blocked, CO backs up into the home. Install a CO detector near the laundry area and keep the vent clear.
Is it safe to run my dryer if I think the vent is clogged?
Stop using it until it is cleaned if you notice a burning smell, the dryer is very hot, or the cabinet is shutting off mid-cycle. Long dry times alone are less urgent but still mean you should book soon.
Is it safe to leave the dryer running when I leave the house or go to bed?
Fire safety experts recommend against it. Most dryer fires start while the dryer is running, and an unattended fire does the most damage. Keep the vent clean so a fire is unlikely in the first place.
What type of dryer duct is a fire hazard?
White vinyl flex duct and thin foil accordion duct. Both trap lint in their ridges, sag, and can melt or burn. Code requires rigid or semi-rigid metal duct. We replace the short flexible section behind the dryer with semi-rigid aluminum for $39.
Does a dryer vent booster fan prevent clogs?
No, and it can hide a clog by forcing air through a restricted duct until the lint catches. Booster fans are only appropriate for runs over 35 feet and must be cleaned with the duct.
What should I do after a small dryer fire?
Call 911 if there are any flames you cannot immediately extinguish. Afterward, do not use the dryer until an appliance tech inspects it, and have the full vent cleaned and inspected since lint in the duct may have smoldered.
Are gas dryer vents more dangerous than electric?
They add a carbon monoxide risk on top of the fire risk. Both types need the same annual cleaning; gas dryers just make the consequences of a blockage more severe.
Does cleaning the dryer vent reduce fire risk right away?
Yes. Removing the lint fuel and restoring airflow immediately drops the operating temperature inside the dryer. Most customers notice the dryer runs noticeably cooler on the very next load.
How the Service Works

What happens during a dryer vent cleaning appointment?
We confirm the vent exit, pull the dryer out and disconnect the transition hose, attach a high-powered vacuum, and run a rotating brush through the full duct length. We clear the exterior cap, reconnect the hose, test airflow before and after, and show you the lint we removed.
How do you measure airflow?
We use an anemometer at the exterior cap or a manometer at the dryer. A healthy 4-inch dryer vent moves exhaust at roughly 1,200–1,800 feet per minute; a restricted one may be under 500. We note the before and after numbers on your receipt.
Will you move my dryer?
Yes, we slide it out to reach the connection and slide it back when we're done. If the dryer is stacked or in a very tight closet we may clean from the exterior instead.
Do you need access to the inside of my home?
Yes for a complete job. Cleaning only from outside can push lint back toward the dryer. We need about 3 feet of space in front of the dryer.
What tools do you use for dryer vent cleaning?
A rotary brush system with flexible rods that reach 35+ feet, a HEPA-filtered vacuum, a reverse-airflow line for stubborn plugs, a camera for inspection, and an airflow meter. We don't use leaf blowers or compressed air alone, which just redistribute lint.
Do you take before and after photos?
We photograph the exterior cap before and after on every job and include them in your emailed receipt. A full camera inspection with interior duct photos is an optional $29 add-on.
Do you check for disconnected or crushed duct?
Yes. A disconnected joint behind a wall or a crushed transition hose is common. We spot it from airflow readings and camera inspection and show you before quoting any repair.
What happens if you can't clear the clog?
In rare cases of a collapsed or disconnected duct inside a wall we cannot fully clear it. You pay nothing for the cleaning and we give you a written description of the issue for an HVAC contractor.
Are your technicians insured?
Yes. We carry general liability insurance and can provide a certificate on request for condo associations and property managers.
Do you clean the vent cover outside?
Yes, every time. We remove lint from the louvers or flapper, remove any illegal screen, and make sure the damper swings freely.

Birds, Nests & Pests
Open this section as its own page →
How do I know if there is a bird nest in my dryer vent?
Chirping from the wall or ceiling near the dryer, twigs or grass around the exterior cap, a flapper stuck open, or a sudden drop in airflow in spring. Starlings and sparrows love the warm 4-inch opening.
Can you remove a bird nest from a dryer vent?
Yes. Bird nest removal is a $69 add-on. We remove the nest material, clean the duct, sanitize, and recommend a pest-proof cap so it doesn't happen again.
What if there are live birds or eggs in the vent?
Minnesota law protects most native birds and active nests during nesting season. Starlings and house sparrows are not protected and can be removed anytime. For protected species with eggs or chicks we may have to wait a few weeks; we will tell you what we find and your options.
How do I keep birds out of my dryer vent?
Install a dryer-rated pest-guard cap with a cage or louvers wide enough to let lint pass but small enough to block birds. Never use window screen. We install these for $89 including the cap.
Can mice or squirrels get into a dryer vent?
Yes, especially through broken flappers on ground-level vents and roof caps near trees. Signs include droppings behind the dryer and chewed flex hose. A pest-guard cap stops them.
Is bird nest material in a dryer vent dangerous?
Very. Dry grass and twigs packed against hot lint are kindling, and nest material also blocks airflow completely. Bird nests are one of the most common causes of the dryer fires we hear about.
Gas vs Electric & Dryer Types
Open this section as its own page →
Do gas dryers need vent cleaning more often than electric?
Same schedule, annually, but it is more important because gas dryer vents carry carbon monoxide. We also check that the gas dryer's exhaust is not venting near windows or intakes.
Do you disconnect the gas line to move the dryer?
No. We slide the dryer out only as far as the flexible gas connector safely allows, which is enough to reach the vent connection. We do not disconnect gas.
Can you clean the vent on a stacked washer-dryer unit?
Yes. We clean from the exterior cap and through the transition hose where reachable. Stacked units in closets often have crushed hoses, which we replace.
Do ventless or heat-pump dryers need vent cleaning?
No. Ventless and heat-pump dryers have no exterior duct. They do need their internal filters and condenser cleaned regularly per the manual.
Does a brand-new dryer need a clean vent?
Yes. Connecting a new dryer to an old lint-filled duct shortens its life and voids some warranty claims. We recommend cleaning the vent whenever a new dryer is installed.
What is the transition hose and why do you replace it?
The transition hose is the short flexible duct connecting the dryer to the wall duct. Foil and plastic versions sag, crush behind the dryer, and trap lint. We replace them with semi-rigid aluminum for $39 including the hose.
Does a dryer vent affect the dryer's moisture sensor?
Yes. Poor airflow keeps humid air in the drum, so the sensor keeps the cycle running. Many "my dryer runs forever on sensor dry" complaints are vent problems.
DIY vs Professional
Open this section as its own page →
Can I clean my dryer vent myself?
You can clear the first few feet with a hardware-store brush kit and a shop vac, and that helps. Full-length cleaning, roof caps, and long runs with elbows need a rotary brush system and a strong vacuum. DIY kits often break off inside the duct or push lint into a plug at the cap.
Can I use a leaf blower to clean my dryer vent?
It is a popular hack but we don't recommend it. A leaf blower can push a lint plug tighter against the cap, blow lint into the wall if a joint is loose, and does nothing for lint stuck to the duct walls.
Why did my DIY vent brush get stuck?
Cheap rods spin apart or kink at elbows. If part of the brush is stuck in your duct, stop and call us; we remove broken rods with a camera and retrieval tool.
How much does a DIY dryer vent cleaning kit cost?
About $20–$40 for a 12–20 foot kit. For a short straight basement run it can be worth it. For roof vents or runs over 15 feet the kit rarely reaches the cap where the clog is.
What maintenance can I do between professional cleanings?
Clean the lint screen every load, wash the screen with soap monthly to remove softener film, check the outdoor flapper opens while the dryer runs, keep shrubs and snow 12 inches from the cap, and never run the dryer with a crushed hose.
Is professional dryer vent cleaning better than DIY?
For anything other than a short, straight, ground-level run, yes. Professionals clean the full length, clear the cap, measure airflow, and catch hazards like disconnected duct or flex hose that DIY misses.
Apartments, Condos & Townhomes
Open this section as its own page →
Do you clean dryer vents in apartments and condos?
Yes. We serve individual units and whole buildings. Condo and apartment vents are often long runs to the roof or a shared chase, and we coordinate with the association or property manager for roof access.
Who is responsible for dryer vent cleaning in a condo?
Usually the unit owner is responsible for the duct from the dryer to the exterior wall of the unit, and the association for common areas and roof caps. Check your declarations; we can clean both and bill separately.
Do you offer pricing for property managers?
Yes. Whole-building scheduled cleanings start at $79 per unit with a single invoice, certificate of insurance, and a unit-by-unit report for your records.
Do you clean townhome dryer vents?
Yes. Twin Cities townhomes often vent through the roof or soffit with very long runs. Many associations schedule us to do every unit in a building on the same day.
Should landlords clean dryer vents between tenants?
Yes. Turnover is the easiest time to clean and document the vent, and it reduces fire liability and tenant complaints about dry times.
Buying, Selling & Landlords
Open this section as its own page →
Should I get the dryer vent cleaned when buying a house?
Yes. Home inspectors note lint at the cap but rarely inspect the full duct. A cleaning and inspection before move-in catches disconnected duct, flex hose, and nests left by the previous owner.
Does a clean dryer vent help sell a house?
It is a small, cheap item that removes an inspection flag and signals a well-maintained home. Sellers often book us the week before listing photos.
Can you provide documentation for a home sale or inspection?
Yes. Every job includes an emailed receipt with before/after cap photos and airflow readings. A written inspection report with interior duct photos is a $29 add-on.
Do home inspectors check dryer vents?
Only superficially. Most note visible lint or an improper screen and recommend a specialist. We are that specialist.
Minnesota Winters & Local Questions
Open this section as its own page →
Does Minnesota winter affect my dryer vent?
Yes. Cold caps condense moisture, which makes lint damp and sticky so it packs harder. Snow drifts block low wall vents, and ice can freeze flappers shut. Fall is the best time to clean before winter.
What is the best time of year to clean a dryer vent in Minnesota?
Fall, before heavy winter use and snow. Spring is a close second, especially for roof vents, to clear nests and winter lint buildup.
Do you clean dryer vents in winter?
Yes, year-round. For roof vents in icy conditions we clean from inside and return free to verify the cap when it is safe to walk the roof.
Which Twin Cities suburbs do you serve?
All of Hennepin, Ramsey, Dakota, Washington, Anoka, Scott, and Carver counties, including Minneapolis, Saint Paul, Bloomington, Edina, Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Plymouth, Maple Grove, Woodbury, Eagan, Burnsville, Lakeville, Apple Valley, Roseville, Blaine, Coon Rapids, Brooklyn Park, Shakopee, Chanhassen and more. See the service area page for the full list.
Is dryer vent cleaning required by code in Minnesota?
The Minnesota Mechanical Code sets installation requirements, like rigid metal duct, no screens, and a maximum developed length, but it does not mandate a cleaning schedule for single-family homes. Many condo associations and insurers do require annual cleaning.
Why is my dryer vent frosting over in winter?
Humid exhaust freezes on contact with a cold cap. Light frost is normal; thick ice that blocks the flapper means airflow is too slow to clear the moisture, which points to lint buildup.
Do you serve Minneapolis and Saint Paul?
Yes, every neighborhood in both cities, plus the surrounding suburbs. There is no trip charge anywhere in the metro.
